Following on from my command line tools I thought some GUI based tools.. frontends for the common tools would be good.

Not tested them all, but the ones I have used seem to work well.

A ripper http://untrepid.com/acidrip/

Superb application.. rip to avi with subs either hardcoded into the video, or with a separate .sub file.

Another ripper http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/

Not as simple to use as acidrip.. but still excellent. Can output in various formats. I use this with a twin pass avidemux to make mpeg2

And another.. ran into trouble with copyproofing, but a good muck about got a working avi eventually. http://dvdshrink.sourceforge.net/

Then a format converter http://www.thugsatbay.com/tabencode.html

Does .rm to mpeg2.. easy, simple and fast. There is a missing dependency libfltk1.1 which is in the multimedia repositories. Once installed everything works brilliantly.. Leave feedback for the devs. they have done a good job of this one.

Another converter http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/
Very good for curing bitrate and format problems.

Then a dvd authoring tool.. http://qdvdauthor.sourceforge.net/

Still waiting for it to be finished, and the building menu's is really confusing. I run the command line dvdauthor because I know how to set it up.

Alternative.. an oddity, built in java.. http://varsha.sourceforge.net/
It works, but messed up my drive settings. Not tried it on etch.

There you go.. with some crafty use of those tools you can rip a dvd with any of the latest protections on. No need for windows at all... or wine for that matter.

If you want to investigate converting raw video/audio I suggest kino http://sourceforge.net/projects/kino/ but I have no use for it at the moment..

There we have it. My secret for ripping even the latest dvd's with nothing but linux..
